Vitality Ultra Pure Omega-s is independently tested and has received the highest possible rating, 5 Stars from the International Fish Oil Standards (IFOS)!
Vitality Ultra Pure Omega-3 is independently tested by the International Fish Oil Standards (IFOS) program, a highly respected organization with the strictest testing standards.
We receive a 5 star rating (see our Certificate below), for our Omega-3 certifying that our fish oil contains no heavy metals and no PCB’s. There is no testing required in the U.S. for fish oil, so always demand an IFOS certificate for your fish oil.
Why is independent testing important?
A California environmental group has sued several fish oil manufacturers for excessive contamination in their fish oils.
The following fish oil supplements were found to contain excessive levels of PCB’s.
- CVS Pharmacy
- Nature Made
- Rite Aid
- GNC, Solgar
- Twinlab
- Now Health
- Omega Protein
- Pharmavite
California law requires that consumers when taking Omega-3 supplements not be exposed to more than 90 nanograms of PCBs, but some of the products sampled contained up to 850 nanograms, nearly 10 times the legal amount!
Additionally, a recent UK study by the Food Standards agency (the UK equivalent of the FDA) that found many brands of Omega-3 contained excess levels of dioxin.
All of this reinforces the need to only take Omega-3 supplements that have been tested by the International Fish Oil Standards (IFOS) program. The IFOS program is a voluntary third-party testing organization that tests fish oil with the strictest standards in the world.
Below is the IFOS testing criteria for a fish oil to receive a 5-star certification:
- Passes All CRN/WHO Testing Categories
- PCB Levels Less than 50% of CRN Standard
- 60% Omega-3 Concentration or Higher
- Oxidation Levels Less than 75% of CRN Standard
- Dioxin Levels Less Than 50% of WHO Standard
CRN is the Council for Responsible Nutrition, and WHO is the World Health Organization. The IFOS program was created in response to the lack of regulation of fish oil products around the world.
Other countries like Canada and Norway strictly control their fish oil supplements but in the U.S. there are no testing requirements. So always demand an IFOS certificate for your fish oil.
